Historic Tulbagh

The historic main street of this unique town is a pleasant fifteen-minute walk from Manley.

The original town of Tulbagh was settled by the Dutch and the French Huguenots in the late 17th century. Today it is a quiet and relaxing, mainly farming community that plays host to visitors from Cape Town and further afield all year round.

Rebuilt after a major earthquake in 1969, Church Street is home to the largest collection of historic period Cape Dutch buildings in one street. Between the private homes, you will find restaurants, craft shops, and galleries. A very pleasant place to wander and sample the local delights.

In winter the surrounding mountains often receive a dusting of snow and the town celebrates Christmas in Winter with a weekend of activities that attracts Capetonians and visitors from all over South Africa. Throughout the year there are a number of festivals celebrating food and wine from the farms in the valley.

As well as the delights of food and wine the surrounding mountains also offer a chance to explore on foot, on a mountain bike, or on horseback. The abundant birdlife attracts ornithologists from all over the world, often in search of the wonderful Fish Eagle.
